The Orthodox Church occupies a floor of an ancient hospice in the Ezelstraat (street of the asses) while an ecumenical chapel is on the ground floor.
According to the archives, the building dates from 1149, but the facades were restored in 2005-2008 on the instructions of the owner, the OCMW of Bruges. In 2007-2008 the orthodox community furnished the interior providing it with dazzling decoration while maintaining the original works of art of Saint Josse.
A characteristic of orthodox churches is the iconostasis, a screen decorated with icons, which separates the nave from the sanctuary, where the priest officiates. This symbolises the separation of the divine from the secular world. The iconostasis was made from lime wood in Greece while the icons were painted in Bruges. Some of the choir stalls were also made by students in Bruges. An artist came for a year from Moscow to paint the frescoes. The central candelabrum plays an important role in the church’s liturgy.
The orthodox church of Bruges welcomes everyone. Greeks,Russians,Serbs,Romanians, Bulgarians, Georgians, Poles and Belgians meet here in a friendly way.
